France Battles Exceptional Wildfire Amid Heatwave and Travel Chaos

The French firefighters are now into their second day struggling with an “exceptional” and “virulent” wildfire that has destroyed 800 hectares of the Fontainebleau forest, which lies about 60 kilometers southeast of the Paris region. As the first time when firefighting planes had been dispatched from the warmer south region to the French capital, the flames have caused major disruptions in public transport by closing the important north-south highway and resulting in six hours of delays for trains to Paris’ Gare de Lyon station. It has come to light that arson is to blame for this as there were 10 ignition points reported within a 1,000 meters radius. Contributing to the rapid heating up of the Europe climate and the third heatwave of the Paris area in summer, this heat wave has shortened the Tour de France race and temporarily shut down three nuclear power stations due to the overheated rivers, among other wildfires in Spain and the UK.
